John Ryan

John has been a birder all his life and has a passion for pelagic bird and mammal watching and has seen over 90% of the world’s seabirds.

A medical doctor with a clinical research practice in the far west of Cornwall, he has lived and worked in Australia, as well as being an expedition doctor and pelagic bird guide and seabird research all over the world.

John was recently part of an expedition to Sao Tome which clarified the status of the almost mythical Sao Tome Storm Petrel, confirming this to be a subspecies of Cape Verde Storm Petrel rather than a species in its own right.

John was also on the West Pacific Odyssey in 2008 when Steve Howell, Chris Collins and others discovered the ‘New Caledonian Storm Petrel’, a bird which is now recognised as a valid species.

Since then John has travelled extensively around the world’s oceans looking for seabirds including ‘Birding Down Under’ and voyages in the Southern Indian Ocean, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
