Primates and Parrots – interim report

The latest WildWings ‘Primates and Parrots’ wildlife cruise in the Brazilian Amazon concluded a few days ago and the voyage was arguably the most successful to date with an impressive range of species being seen.  Thirty species of primates were recorded including incredible views of a family of Santarem Marmosets at a newly discovered site which were watched at a matter of metres for almost an hour.

The long list of other primates included Golden-white Tassel-eared Marmoset, White-faced Saki, Red-nosed Bearded Saki, Red-faced Spider Monkey, Collins’s Squirrel Monkey, Pied and Midas Tamarins and Amazon Black Howler.

Other mammals seen included three species of porcupines, Amazonian Long-tailed, Eastern Amazonian Dwarf and Black-tailed, along with Kinkajou, a selection of forest rats and bats and almost daily sightings of both river dolphins.

Another objective of the trip was to look for the localised parrot species of the region and this goal was achieved with Golden Parakeet, Bald Parrot, Vulturine Parrot and Crimson-bellied Parakeet all found, along with the added bonus of the relatively recently described Sulphur-bellied Parakeet which was recorded for the first time on this itinerary.

The next departure of this pioneering wildlife cruise will be in May 2028 and please click here to view the relevant page on our website.
